Autism and Board Games

Doctors Liam Cross & Gray Atherton observed that there is an intersection between autism and board games. Atherton describes that board games support the development of social cognition and theory of mind, especially for autistic individuals, whose common characteristics are social and communication challenges, propensity for systems and logic, special interests, and difficulties with theory of mind.

Autistic individuals describe board games as a social lubricant that helps reduce social anxiety through a defined system of interaction. This is especially true for adults with autism who gain friendships and social interaction from the hobby. This can be one of the solution for socializing as an autistic individual or how parents can connect with their autistic child.
